Our participants find new confidence and hope that they can carry with them forever
The Horizon Prison Initiative
The Horizon Prison Initiative
For 20 years Horizon Prison Initiative has brought hope and healing to incarcerated peoples, and their communities. From in-prison programming to reentry care, Horizon Prison Initiative aims to positively impact communities in meaningful and lasting ways. Horizon Prison Initiative has successfully served at correctional facilities such as Chillicothe, Marion, London, and most recently the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW)
Horizon’s year-long program engages participants in dormitory-style living with 6-8 other participants. By living as a family unit, participants learn how to live with others, a skill that will serve them the rest of their lives. Participants meet in the evenings to study Horizon Instructor-led courses exploring multifaith spiritual development, victim awareness, and trauma recovery, amongst other topics.
Horizon participants have historically had lower rates of recidivism than average, lowering the rate from the statewide average of 27% to just 9%. For every 10 graduates of our program that are in the community, the State of Ohio saves $260,000 annually. Our program not only helps taxpayers, but transforms lives and communities for the better. Our graduates often go on to start their own businesses or nonprofits, and serve as key support for their respective communities.
